Job Vacancy: Board Member
Captain Hoek Foundation is looking for one or more General Board Members for 2 hours per week | Unpaid Position | Closing Date: 11/01/2023
Captain Hoek Foundation, established in 2018 by Jan Hoek, is dedicated to the empowerment of neurodivergent* artists and other artists who are marginalized within the art world. We aim to create a vibrant and inclusive arts community and reduce the division between “outsider” and “insider” art.
Over the past three years, the foundation has successfully connected over 90 artists from previously separate worlds. The outcomes of these long-term projects are displayed in our permanent art space, No Limits! Art Castle, and beyond. Thanks to sustainable partnerships with organizations such as Cordaan, the Hermitage Amsterdam, Patta, and Art Brut Biƫnnale, we have expanded our reach.
No Limits! Art Castle is the first art space in the Netherlands that stands for a limitless art world. No boundaries exist between so-called “outsider” artists and the rest of the art world, between art and design, day and night culture, or fantasy and reality. Here, you can view and purchase art. Plus, it’s housed in a castle!
The space is part of Sexyland World, located on the IJ in Amsterdam North. We’re open from Wednesday to Sunday, with No Limits! Art Castle staying open until midnight on weekends. There is always a host available to provide insights into the art and the artists.
At No Limits! Art Castle, we have a director (Jan Hoek), a business leader (Sarah Nuiver), an assistant director (Mohamed Boujarra), a dedicated marketing professional, a permanent production manager, and support for fundraising. Additionally, we collaborate closely with various artists, hosts, and interns. Our financial income comes from art sales and grants.
The board consists of:
- Yasmine Abiadh, Chairperson (campaign leader at BKB)
- Cecile Mullens Wentges, Treasurer (entrepreneur in the cultural sector)
- Marein Roelandschap, Secretary (corporate lawyer)
The Captain Hoek Foundation board is a policy-setting board with three current members. The board ensures that the director achieves the organization’s objectives. They serve as employer, supervisor, and advisor to the director and the organization. We provide guidelines for policies and approve them. Proactive thinking and contributing to policy are important to us.
New Board Members
The role of a board member is for a period of four years, with the possibility of extension once. The board meets four times a year, not including interim meetings if necessary. In addition to expertise, the board aims for (neuro)diversity to represent a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
The current board is diverse, with various educational backgrounds, work experiences, and interests. We are seeking one or more board members who enjoy contributing to governance and providing advice.
We are looking to expand our board with members who can contribute to one or more of the following areas:
- Art: You are actively involved in the art world (or a related sector), bringing knowledge and experience, and staying informed about current developments.
- PR: You possess expertise in marketing, communication, and public relations. Journalistic experience is a plus.
- Societal: You can connect topics within the arts and culture with societal challenges, such as those in the social domain.
How to Apply
If you are interested in becoming a board member at Captain Hoek Foundation, please send your brief motivation and CV by November 1, 2023, to: sarah@nolimitsartcastle.nl.
*Neurodiversity (noun) refers to the differences in people’s brains. There is no standard brain. Just as we have biodiversity, cultural diversity, and racial diversity, there is also diversity in brains.
